North Sails: News Details

Latest from our Hungarian 420 Sailors

Gergely and Daniel Bihary

Gergely Bihary & twin brother Daniel  from Hungary started sailing 3 years ago and have  been developing themselves consistently since then in the 420 class.

They recently took part in the Spring Cup in Austria racing with the North Japanese designs the M-9 main, the new J12 battened jib,  and the S-01 spinnaker. They have sent us their report below.

We had a wonderful time in Austria in the last three days and we come back with great results as well. We have won the championship with a considerable lead of 15 points. Here is a short catch-up of the action:

Our main goal was to practice starting and upwind tactics in a fleet bigger than the Hungarian, which we managed to do pretty well. All our starts were quite good, on-time and on-speed which is a great step-up from our performance in Izola.

The regatta started on Saturday with light to medium breeze from the South. We finished with a consistent 1,2,2 after the first three races, which gave us a good thrust through the second day.

On Sunday the weather was a little colder and the breeze stronger. We had winds of around 5-6 Bft. which made the day all the more interesting. It was great to see that our sailing technique was far superior than the rest of the boats in upwind, as we have made a considerable lead in every upwind leg of the race. But this is no stopping point, we'll try to get even more faster to be at our top speed at the big events this summer, like the ISAF Youth Worlds in Cyprus.

The last day was again in light and tricky winds, but we managed to finish at the first and second place with our conservative tactic.

All in all the regatta was a lot of fun and we gained a lot of experience! Our next race is going to be in Hungary in two weeks time, so there is no time for a break!

Gergely & Daniel will also be attending the 420 Worlds in Valencia and Kiel Week in Germany.  To find out more about the North designs they use please see our 420 class page.
