Ever since North Sails One Design started making sails our goal has been to make the fastest sails for any type of boat. The International Optimist Dinghy Class has always been one of our main focus points as these sailors are the one’s that we will be the future of our sport. The Optimist is the dinghy in which the young people of the world learn to sail. Sailed in over 110 countries by over 150,000 young people it is the only dinghy approved by the International Sailing Federation exclusively for sailors under 16 years of age.
North Sails One Design has been working harder than ever for the past few years developing the fastest, state of the art sails for the Optimist. Sailors all over the world are desperate for that extra knot of speed and to help achieve this North Sails has had a team working full time on research and development of easy to trim fast shapes for all size Optimist sailors.
Which North design is best for me? North Sails offers different designs based on the sailor's weight and predominant wind conditions. See our sail chart below. If you still have questions about the designs, don't hesitate to contact the

Mainsail (P-5)
The P-5 Mainsail has been designed in the North Sails Japan loft. The P5 is designed with the same program that was used to design the sails for the winner in the 2008 Olympics in the 470. The sail is an all round sail that has slightly more power in the head than the H08 had. This gives the sail a slight bias towards lighter winds, however when depowered properly it will still perform well in the breeze. This sail will suit sailors over 40 kilos. The sail comes with numbers, battens, window, IODA button, tell tails and sail bag.
