Which North design is best for me?
North Sails offers different designs based on the sailor's weight and predominant wind conditions. Contact our
Optimist Experts or your local North Loft or Agent to find out which is the best sail for you.

Mainsail (V4)  New!

Sailor weight: less than 43 Kg

The V-4 has been developed for lighter sailors and is a further development of the successful DZero6. Compared to the DZero6 the V-4 is a little deeper overall but without such an aggressive take up in the base. A major difference is the increase in leech normal [twist] in the V-4. This has produced a far more manageable sail in strong winds. The head angle has also been increased by 1 degree which has further helped the sail in stronger winds. In order to balance the increase in depth the section shapes have been adjusted to reduce back camber [return in the leech] in the lower three quarters of the sail. The result is a sail with a little more power in the light but with the ability to auto-depower in stronger winds.

Mainsail standard features:

  • Class insignia
  • Sail numbers
  • Vision windows
  • Epoxy battens
  • Leech tell tales
  • Trim tell tales
  • Long roll bag
  • Sail tie pack
  • Class royalty label

Mainsail (V6)  New!

Sailor weight: more than 43 Kg

The V-6 has been developed for slightly heavier sailors and is a further development of the successful CZero5, it incorporates many of the characteristics of the V-4 but is just a little deeper [0.5%] to give more power. Compared to the CZero5 a major difference is the increase in leech normal [Twist] in the V-6.

Mainsail (P-4)

Sailor weight: 34-43 Kg
The radial P-4 Mainsail is medium design sail for sailors between 34-43 kilos. It has been added to the range of North Optimist sails after extensive testing and very positive feedback. It is a very easy to use radial design, developed along the same principals as the P-5, but slightly flatter. It is manufactured from Dacron 2.99 Polykote.

Mainsail standard features:

  • Class insignia
  • Sail numbers
  • Vision windows
  • Epoxy battens
  • Leech tell tales
  • Trim tell tales
  • Long roll bag
  • Sail tie pack
  • Class royalty label

Mainsail (P-5)

Sailor weight: more than 43 Kg
The radial P-5 Mainsail has been designed in the North Sails Japan loft. The P5 is designed with the same program that was used to design the sails for the winner in the 2008 Olympics in the 470. The sail is an all round sail that has slightly more power in the head than the H08 had. This gives the sail a slight bias towards lighter winds, however when depowered properly it will still perform well in the breeze. This sail will suit sailors over 43 kilos. It is manufactured from Dacron 2.99 Polykote.

Mainsail standard features:

  • Class insignia
  • Sail numbers
  • Vision windows
  • Epoxy battens
  • Leech tell tales
  • Trim tell tales
  • Long roll bag
  • Sail tie pack
  • Class royalty label
